If you are considering ShipFast, read this first
The free alternatives are genuinely competitive. 8 of the kits above are open source, and several outscore every paid kit in the directory, mostly because half the method is about what a buyer can check, and an open repository answers those questions by existing.
What a paid kit is actually buying you is not in the code. It is a private support channel, a vendor who answers, and a set of library choices already made. Those are real, and this method can only partly see them: it can check that a support channel is stated publicly, not whether anyone answers on it. If that is what you are paying for, weigh it yourself; do not let a score decide it.
Check the last commit before anything else. The most expensive mistake with a starter kit is not picking the wrong one, it is picking an abandoned one and finding out four months in. Every row on this site prints its last commit, and for kits with no public repository it says so plainly rather than leaving the column blank.
Among the paid alternatives, supastarter scores highest at 59 points at $299-$1499 one-time. Like ShipFast, we have not run it.
Built on Next.js, React, MongoDB, Stripe, Mailgun. Before paying, look at the free kits. Several of them we have actually run, several score higher, and it is much easier to justify a paid kit once you know precisely what the free ones did not do for you.

What is the best ShipFast alternative for a team?
MakerKit or supastarter, because they are the two that publish a multi-seat licence at all. MakerKit Teams is $649 for up to 5 collaborators and adds a private Discord channel; supastarter Startup is $799 for up to 5 developer seats and includes a 60-minute consulting call. supastarter also publishes an Agency tier at $1,499 for shipping client projects. ShipFast's page names no team tier, which is not the same as forbidding one, it means the terms are not published.
Are cheaper starter kits worse?
Not on the terms in this table, ShipFast at $199 allows unlimited projects and lifetime updates, exactly as the $349 kit does. What the extra money buys is scope: MakerKit's feature table names Organizations/Teams, Super Admin, i18n and a Figma UI kit as shipped, and both of the dearer kits offer a stack or framework choice where ShipFast offers one path. Price is the least informative row here, which is why KitGrade scores kits on what a buyer can check before paying rather than on what they cost.
How do I check a starter kit is still maintained before buying?
Look for a date the vendor publishes about itself, and treat a lifetime-updates promise as a separate and weaker claim. Read off the vendors' own pages on 14 August 2026: supastarter's pricing block carries "Last updated 1 day ago"; ShipFast's All-in tier carries "Updated 6 months ago"; MakerKit states "Continuous updates" without a date. That is the whole reason KitGrade exists, the things a buyer can verify before paying are a short list, and almost none of them are the things a sales page leads with.
